If I had to buy a Engineering book that was required by my school but wasn't accounted for in my Student 1098 form is that okay if I still put it into the required box?

The book I was required to buy was a steel manual for my steel design class.

Q. Is that okay if I still put it into the required box?

A. Yes.

But there is actually a separate place to enter books (and a required computer) in the TurboTax interview. That is the correct place to enter those expenses. But, if you are an undergrad, it is OK to just add the book expenses to the box 1 amount of the 1098-T.  Books are not a qualified expense for the "grad student credit" (LLC).
