DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!! Indiana did it to my bf, I owe in Student Loans (he owes nothing) he claimed me as a dependent and my old school took his refund. We were NEVER married and they took his state tax return funds. I'm not sure if the new tax laws have something to do with the state being able to take refundsor what. MY personal suggestion is, If you are beyond broke and rely on tax money to get you through the year DO NOT CLAIM THAT PERSON!

I live in az. I’ve been retired due to health since July. My student loan has gone to collections. My son wants to add me as a dependent to his taxes. Will his refund be taken for the student loan.

No, not if you're listed as his dependent, and the loan is in your name.

At the federal level, the IRS cannot seize your tax refund to pay for the debts of dependent claimed on your tax return.  As far as the states, it depends on their own rules.  I would suggest you contact the Department of Revenue of your state to verify.
