I'm currently an independent in University and during my first semester I was charged $1,089 for the student health insurance plan which was required. Is this deductible?

Would this go under books and materials required since the school required me to pay that insurance.

No, student health insurance is not considered as qualified education expenses.

Please read this IRS document for more information.
