I'm a grad student and the university gave me a 1098T. It is giving me an error when I list that box 5 (scholarship) all goes towards the income stated on W-2

Many grad students have fellowships which pay their tuition and fees and also a monthly stipend.  If you are in this situation, the amount of the stipend is taxable as income since it does not go for tuition.  You may be able to deduct your books, etc., under educational expenses.
