I did not qualify for the Lifetime Learning credit, yet TurboTax is saying I have to upgrade because I have the credit. How do I fix this since I didn't even qualify?

If TurboTax is prompting you to upgrade because of the Lifetime Learning Credit, even though you don't qualify for it, likely because you correctly included a 1098-T form, you can resolve this issue by following these steps:

Delete the Form 1098-T:

  • Open your return in TurboTax.
  • Use the search bar (magnifying glass icon) and type "1098-T."
  • Click on the "Jump to 1098-T" link.
  • On the "Your Education Expenses Summary" page, click the trash can icon next to the Form 1098-T to delete it. This will remove the form and stop the request for upgrade.

Important Note:

  • The IRS has received your Form 1098-T, so if you do not report it, your tax records will differ from what the IRS has on file. Even if you don't qualify for the credit, you should still include the form in your return to avoid discrepancies.
  • The 1098-T reporting form is only available if you upgrade your TurboTax version.
