I AM A RETIRED SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR WHO HAS BEEN MENTORING ELEMENTARY KIDS ALL YEAR ROUND. I DON'T GET ANY EXPENSES REIMBURSED. WHERE CAN I DEDUCT MY MENTORING EXPENSES?

I AM AUTHORIZED BY THE BOONE COUNTY MENTORING ASSOCIATION TO MENTOR IN ANY CAPACITY UNDERPRIVILEGED AND UNDERACHIEVING STUDENTS FROM MOSTLY BROKEN HOMES. I DO THIS WILLINGLY AS I KNOW THE NEED IN THE COMMUNITY. I AM USING ITS DEDUCTIBLE ALONG WITH TURBOTAX DELUXE MAC 2016.

Assuming your mentoring is strictly volunteer work and you receive no compensation:

You can deduct all of your out of pocket expenses as cash contributions as well as 14 cents per mile for travelling by auto in the service of your qualified volunteer organization.

To enter volunteer contributions:

  • Type in charitable contributions. in the search box, top right of your screen, then click the magnifying glass

  • Click the jump to charitable contributions link in the search results.

  • Follow the prompts and onscreen instructions to enter

To benefit from the above, you must itemize your deductions.
