can i deduct the almost $45,000 spent, without a 1098-T?

You would enter your education expenses in the Education section and here are the steps:

( Please make sure your school is an eligible institution, click here: Foreign schools and that you meet the exceptions for not providing the Form 1098-T)

In TurboTax online,

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
  • Select Jump to 1098t
  • On the screen, Now Let's gather XYZ's Additional Education Expenses
  • Follow prompts
  • Next screen, Your Education Expenses Summary, select Edit
  • Next screen Here's Your Education Summary, under Tuition, select Edit to enter tuition information
  • Please see the image below

Note:  Originally, the Tuition and Fees deduction was suspended by the end of 2017.  However, it has come back.

On December 20, 2019, President Donald Trump signed into law the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019 (the Act). The new legislation retroactively resurrects and extends this tax break along with other extenders including individual and business federal income tax breaks.  Therefore, you are allowed to claim this deduction for the year 2018, 2019 and 2020.  For details, click here: Tuition and Fees deduction
