You can remove the Lifetime Learning Credit by deleting Form 8863 - Education Credits.  To do this please follow these steps:

TurboTax Online

  1. While in your return, click on Tax Tools > Tools (in the black bar at the side of your screen).
  2. In the Tools Center, under Other helpful links click on Delete a form.
  3. Click Delete next to the form you want to delete and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Once you have finished deleting the desired form(s) click the Continue with My Return box (in the lower right of your screen).

TurboTax CD/Download

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar
  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, click on the form you wish to open and delete.
  3. Click on the Delete Form box at the bottom of the screen.
  4. To return to the interview, click on the Step-By-Step icon in the top right of the blue bar.

Why do you want to do that?

Hello! On my account it is saying I still qualify for Lifetime learning credit even though I have no form 8863 listed in my documents. How do I fix this?

You will not get a Form 8863. It is generated by TurboTax based on your inputs. Did you input any tuition or education related expenses? Based on that information and your inputs, you would have qualified for Lifetime Learning Credit which would have created the Form 8863.  You don't physically get a Form 8863 in the mail or from any educational institution. It is created by TurboTax based on your inputs.

Hello! Yes but there is no 8863 form even listed under my forms in TurboTax for me to remove so that I can get rid of the lifetime learning credit. I am just confused because in one section it says I do not qualify for lifetime learning credit but then when I go to file my taxes it says I must upstage upgrade in order to file.

I did have tuition expenses however! Does this mean I automatically qualify for the lifetime learning credit?

Please try the following method:

  1. Click on Tax Home from Left Side Menu.
  2. Click On Personal Info from the main screen and then click on Review/Edit.
  3. Then from the Left Side Menu, click on Tax Tools and then Tools. Then click on Delete a form. On this page, do you see options for "Educator Expenses Worksheet" or "Education Tuition and Fees Summary"? Click on Delete next to it

This should let you proceed ahead.

@AamilD Hello! I went through and refiled through turbo tax and then deleted "Education Tuition and Fees Summary." However, it still says I need to upgrade.

It's doing the same thing for me too. It says I have to upgrade because "You have the Lifetime Learning credit." but I don't actually qualify. Now I have to wait to talk to someone on the phone because I refuse to pay the $60 to upgrade because the website is glitching to get me to spend money.

If you don't qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit,  or want to eliminate it, you'll have to delete the forms that are related to education credits.

If you see form 8863 and form 1098-T, delete them. Click here for instructions

@AamilD @Hal_Al Just as with the others on this forum, even after deleting the 'Education Summary' and '1098-T' forms, I am still being told that I have the Lifetime Learning Credit and is asking me to pay $60 for the upgrade. Please assist!!

You will need to delete the Form 8863 and 1098-T to remove the credit.

If you are using:

  • Online: see How do I view and delete forms in TTO?
  •  Desktop: If you are working in the cd/download TurboTax program:
    1. On the top right, there is a FORMS button.
    2. Click on FORMS.
    3. Locate the form you want to delete.
    4. Click on the form name.
    5. Below the form, bottom left, select DELETE FORM button.
