Check your 2021 return to see if you received the American Opportunity Tax Credit.

The AOTC is computed on Form 8863, Education Credits. If you received the credit, this form should be in your return.

To look at last year’s return:  How do I view and download a prior-year return?

Q.  How can I tell if I received the American opportunity credit last year?

A.  For most people, there will be an entry on line 29 of form 1040 (2021).

The  American opportunity credit comes  in two pieces. The non refundable portion on line 3 of Schedule 3 (then line 20 of form 1040), if you have a tax liability to offset,  and the refundable portion on line 29 of form 1040.  See form 8863 for details
