How can I put my beauty school tuition as a tax break. Fully out of pocket, no scholarships or financial aid was used.

It was $3500+ because more than just the tuition was paid for. I was required to buy lots of supplies as well.

You can potentially claim your beauty school tuition and related expenses as a tax break through education credits.  If the requirements below are met.

  • Beauty schools generally qualify if they are eligible educational institutions. You can check if your school qualifies by seeing if they issue a Form 1098-T or by verifying with the school directly.
  • Must be Qualified Education Expenses: These include tuition, fees, and other related expenses required for enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution. Supplies that are necessary for your courses can also be included

To be eligible for the tuition credits, the course must be taken at "an eligible institution". The school should be able to tell you if it is an eligible educational institution. In general, an eligible educational institution is an accredited college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution, including accredited, public, nonprofit, and proprietary (privately-owned, profit-making) postsecondary institutions. Additionally, in order to be an eligible educational institution, the school must be eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the Department of Education. If they issue a 1098-T they are probably an eligible institution.

Enter your school at the link below, to see if it's on the dept. of education list.

If it is on the list,

If you did not get a 1098-T, after answering no to getting a 1098-T, answer yes to qualifying for an exception.
