Had au pair in 2017. Paid agency fee, weekly stipend, phone bill, auto insurance, and $500 toward tuition. Not sure how to itemize/enter this in Turbtax.

As long as the host family has used an au pair’s child care services in order to work or look for employment, the stipend paid to the au pair, the costs of room and board and the fees paid to an agency are all eligible under the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.

To enter your information and file a Form 2441 in TurboTax Deluxe online program, here are the steps:

  • Sign in to your account and select Take me to my return
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in childcare and Enter
  • Select  Jump to childcare
  • On-screen, Did you pay for child or dependent care in 2017? answer Yes and follow the prompts.

For more information, please see  AuPair  and  https://www.aupairinamerica.com/fees/

Some additional fees that could be deductible also include private room and board, the weekly stipend paid to the au pair/companion, automobile insurance, public transportation if not providing use of a car, educational allowance towards tuition, and course materials.

On Au Pair America's website, they have a Host Family Q&A and 2 questions regarding the agency fees.

https://www.aupairinamerica.com/resources/host-family-tips/taxqa/

Q. Does the program fee paid by the Host Family to Au Pair in America qualify as a childcare expense?

A. Au Pair in America advises Host Families to discuss this issue with their tax advisor and obtain an opinion.

I cannot find anything in the IRS Reg's regarding the Agency Fees as being usable for the Child Care Credit
