Graduate school tuition paid in January 2017 for school term that started/was billed for in 2016. Can I claim the payment toward my 2016 taxes?

No, qualified education expenses, such as tuition, can only be claimed on the tax return for the year paid.

You can include your tuition payment made in 2017 on your 2017 tax return.
