Estimated taxes for Married Filing Joing with W2 and 1099

Hello,

My spouse and I both work I receive a W2 and my spouse receives a 1099. I typically track our income during the year and have a good idea of our total tax burden. If, based on our total tax situation and only my witholdings, we expect to meet our overall tax burden, does my spouse need to pay estimated taxes? If not, are we required to file any sort of form proving such?

Q. Does my spouse need to pay estimated taxes?

A. No.  You are allowed to do what you are doing: withholding enough from your pay to cover both of you.

Q. If not, are we required to file any sort of form proving such?

A. No. As long as the numbres work out, you're Ok

What about the self emplyment tax (SS/Medicare) implications? Would we still need to pay that amount?

The self-employment taxes are taken into consideration on the estimated tax calculation in TurboTax.  To review your estimated payment calculation for 2021 please follow these steps:

  1. In your return, click Federal Taxes > Other Tax Situations.
  2. In the Other Tax Forms section click the Start/Update box next to Form W-4 and estimated taxes.
  3. On the screen, Adjust How Much Tax You Pay, click the No box.
  4. On the Review Your Estimates screen, click the Review Now box.
  5. You can continue through the screens and review your entries.

Withholding is withholding.  So, you can have a little more  tax withheld from your pay.  At tax filing time, your total withholding is applied to your joint combined income tax/self employment tax liability.  For both withholding and estimated tax payments, none is earmarked specifically for self employment.  It is just an estimate of total due.
