I am trying to enter educational expenses for my two children. In the section "Let's get some information about the students" I answered questions about each one: Son attended both high school and college in 2019 (and had no high school tuition expense) whereas Daughter attended only high school and had high school tuition expenses. But when I get to the next set of questions, e.g., "Now let's gather Son's additional education expenses", Daughter's tuition shows up there and I can't correct it on the screen.
If I go to the "Student Information Worksheets", indeed the background information for the two children is switched, i.e., it shows Son as a high schooler who paid tuition and Daughter as a college student. But the 1098-T information I entered for Son does show up on his Worksheet, so the net result is a mash-up of the two children's profiles. I have checked repeatedly that what I entered on the screens is correct, but for some reason the program is entering them incorrectly.
What is the best way to fix this? Do I need to directly fill out the Student Information Worksheet for each one? Should I reset all the educational information (and if so, how?) and start over?
The easiest way would be to Edit the son's 1098-T to remove all the Daughter's info from it. Then Click on Add New Student to capture her expenses (again)
Here's how to edit the 1098-T in TurboTax:
From Deductions & Credits
Expenses and Scholarships (form 1098-T) hit Update
From the page that says Now Let's Gather The Additional Education Expenses
Hit Continue. You will need to continue through several screens until you get to the screen that says Your Education Expenses Summary click Edit
At Here's Your Education Summary you can Edit, Delete or Add New School
