Do 529 distributions/1099-Q and 1098-T expenses need to be reported on either my tax return or my son's tax return if qualified expenses exceeded distributions?

Yes.  You must report 529 Plan distributions.  However, you will not be taxed on the distribution as the funds were used to pay for qualifying education expenses.  

You will enter Form 1098-T on the same tax return to report the amount in Box 1, Payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses.

You may still be eligible for education credits since the education expenses paid exceed the amount received from the 529 Plan.
