Yes, if she has not yet received a BS or competed the number of credit hours that the school requires for a BS.
She has a Bachelor of Science degree. She is now enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at a different school. 1098-T Box 9 is not checked. Is she considered an undergraduate for tax filing purposes? If not, why is Box 9 not checked?
Q. Is she considered an undergraduate for tax filing purposes?
A. No*
Q. If not, why is Box 9 not checked?
A. You'll have to ask the school that question.
*For tax purposes, being a grad student could have a few ramifications. The biggest being qualifying for The American Opportunity credit (AOC). But that is covered by different questions in the TurboTax (TT) interview. She doesn't qualify for the AOC, unless the BS was received in 2024. Even then "the 4 times rule" will probably disqualify her.
So, it depends on Why do you want to know? What tax attribute are you wanting to claim?
