Continuing Education Deduction - EMT to EMT-P credential

Hello,

I was wondering my paramedic school is not eligible for FAFSA grants or financial aid. However, it does give continuing education hours and fulfills the requirements to upgrade my credential from EMT to EMT-P allowing me to increase my scope of practice. I was wondering if the 10,000 dollars I spent would qualify as continuing education expenses since it is not a new trade and I am currently working as an EMT and would only gain a job title increase with additional medication scope and responsibility. I would continue working on the same ambulance, running the same calls, just running the leadership position on scene after I finish my registry examination. Any clarification on the topic?

I paid cash, no financing, no interest.

Thank you.

Under the new tax law, starting in 2018, there is no longer a deduction for job expenses, for regular W-2 employees, including the cost of  either voluntary or mandatory continuing education.

If you education does not qualify for the tuition credit (because the school is not an "eligible institution"), there is no other deduction available to you.
