College Tuition

Turbo Tax will not prompt me to enter my son's college tuition.  It asks for other expenses, but not college tuition.

1) Do you have a Form 1098-T?

2) How was tuition paid? Scholarship? Grant? Military Academy? Other?

3) Is your son otherwise qualified as a dependent on your return? Age, sole or joint custody?

Same here - never even asked if I have a 1098-T and takes me immediately to books and supplies.  Can't get help anywhere

I have the same issue.  Says I already entered the info, but I didn't.

The order in which forms are entered is important with the Education Section.

To enter the 1098-T:

Type   1098-T   into the search box

Click the "Jump to 1098-T" link

This is directly from the TurboTax help topic on 1098-T, Italics & Underline, mine.

To enter Form 1098-T:

  1. Open or continue your return, if you're not already in it.
  2. Search for 1098T and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results.
  3. Select Yes on the Do you want to enter your higher education expenses? screen.   This does not come up!  It goes to this:  Now Let's Gather Molly's Additional Education Expenses
  4. On the Your Education Expenses Summary screen, select Add A Student.
  5. Select the name of your student (this could be you, your spouse, or a dependent) and Continue.
  6. Answer some questions about the student and then you'll reach the Did [student] get a 1098-T from [school] for 2019? screen. Select Yes and Continue.

After answering "Did she pay for books & materials to attend school?" with "Yes" and "Did you take tax-free distributions from a 529 to pay student loans?" with "No", it goes to a Scholarships & Financial Aid page. I answered "Yes" and then put in the 1098-T amount. Then I put in prior year adjustments (from 1098-T form). After all of that, it says that this is income.... because THERE IS NO PLACE TO ENTER HER TUITION!!!!!!!

Where do I put in the actual tuition and expenses????

I found that by deleting the education forms (go to the Tools menu on the sidebar and then "delete forms"), it let me start over and do it in the right order, thus getting everything in there that I needed to. It makes no sense that you can't enter it later, if you get your forms out of order and do the sections as you receive them (that's how I usually do it every year). But at least this was a fix.

And also, this increased our refund $450!  Woo-hoo!!
