Can you get a tax break for tuition to a trade school.

My daughter went to a dental assistant school. i paid for the class and received a receipt but we did not receive a 1098-T. She took the trade school to help her get a job but was not an actual requirement for her job. She had to take the class to get her dental assistant licenses.

Your daughter may, if she meets all other requirements, qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit, which is available for "All years of post secondary education and for courses to acquire or improve job skills."

Please see this IRS Education Benefits Comparison Chart to determine if your daughter's tuition qualifies for the credit.

Don't worry about not having a Form 1098-T. Go to the education section of the TurboTax Easy Step interview and begin entering your daughter's information. When asked if you have a Form 1098-T, answer "no" and follow the steps from there to input your tuition payment information.
