Can I use my student loan interest deduction on the FREE federal tax return?

For previous years the student loan interest deduction was included in the free edition of federal return.  Please advise.

No you can't. The new tax forms require one of the 6 new schedules to enter the student loan interest because it cannot be entered directly on to the new 1040. The Free Edition will only handle entries directly on to the new 1040 without the need for any of the new schedules.

Same issue with me. Cost me $160 to file this year.

You might be able to use the Free File  (formally called Freedom Edition) for incomes under $33,000 and supports all states and most forms.

The Free File is part of the IRS Free File alliance and is totally separate from TurboTax website.

How do I switch to TurboTax Free File?
