Can I deduct expenses to get my daughter to College?

We live in Virginia and my daughter started her first year of college at University of Utah.  Can I deduct expenses to move her out there and the expenses related to the orientation my daughter, wife and I attended?

No.

Moving expenses are not considered a qualified education expenses. See the rules regarding qualified education expenses below:

Expenses that Do Not Qualify

Even if you pay the following expenses to enroll or attend the school, the following are not qualified education expenses:

  • Room and board

  • Insurance

  • Medical expenses (including student health fees)

  • Transportation

  • Similar personal, living or family expenses

Orientation fees that were required for your daughter could be included in total qualified education expenses. However, any expenses related to you and your wife attending would not be deductible.
