Can i claim tuition expenses for my state tax return?

If i deducted tuition expenses in my federal tax return, do i need to add it back in my state tax return? Or i just forward the adjusted gross income to my state tax return?

Which state? Rules vary.

But generally, the tuition and fees deduction is not an add back in most (I don't know of any) state return, nor is there an adjustment, on the state return, for having claimed a tuition credit on the federal return.

Another general rule: TurboTax(TT) will automatically make any such add back/adjustment and there's nothing for you to do. TT automatically transfer the federal AGI to the state return.

It depends on the state. Every state return is different.

Neither have an add back/adjustment.

May I ask, what has prompted you to ask that question?

Thank you! I'm just asking to make sure my state tax return is correct
