It is considered a qualified education expense for the Lifetime learning credit if you purchased it from the school that you are attending, and that the school required it.

Qualified education expenses must be paid by:

  • You or your spouse if you file a joint return,
  • A student you claim as a dependent on your return, or
  • A third-party including relatives or friends.

Qualified education expenses

To report it on your return,

  1. Go to Federal
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Education
  4. Select Edit or update next to Expenses and scholarships
  5. On Your Education Expenses Summary screen (assuming you already reported the 1098-t) , click Edit next to the student name.
  6. Select start next to Other Education Expenses.

Q. Can Computer be deducted if needed for medical school as could not function without it?

A. No.

A computer is a qualified expense for the credit that undergrads can claim. But, it is not for the only credit that grad students ae eligible for (the Lifetime learning Credit [LLC]).
