Can a cosigner on a student loan claim the interest paid? TT says name has to be on the 1098. IRS says "legally obligated to pay the loan" which I am.
TT claims that the tax law requires that only the person whose name is on the 1098 can claim student loan interest. The IRS rules say nothing of the sort. It says only that the person claiming it has to be legally obligated for the land and be the person who made the payments. Where in the IRS info does it say that the names have to match?

Q. Can a cosigner on a student loan claim the interest paid?
A. Yes, since you actually paid it and are legally obligated.
Just ignore the gobbledygook on TT and enter the interest as if you were the one who got the 1098-E.
