In TurboTax Deluxe, after you enter a 1098-T, there's a page where it says "Did (student's) Aid Include Amounts Not Awarded for 2022 Expenses"... I said "Yes" and entered the amount of aid that was actually for 2021. My question is why the original amount isn't reduced by that amount entered. In fact, on the next page about paying for room and board with a scholarship, the original incorrect 1098-T amount is stated. Finally, when you get to the "Education Summary" page, the amount shown for "Scholarship/Grants (for all schools)" also shows the 1098-T amount - not the amount reduced by the figure entered for "amount not awarded for 2022 expenses". If you can't correct the 1098-T box 5 amount this way, how can you?
The scholarship amount that you entered that 'was not for 2022' is shown on the Student Info Worksheet, Part V, Education Assistance.
So it is being used in the calculation for Qualified Education Expenses for the American Opportunity/Lifetime Learning Credit, even though the display screens in the interview may not reflect that.
