1098-T Wks (School): Box 1- Payments and Box 2 amounts billed on Form 1098-T cannot both have a value.

An error popped up saying "1098-T Wks (school): Box - Payments and Box 2 amounts billed on Form 1098-T cannot both have a value. Remove either the Box 1 or Box 2 amount" Box 1 is what I actually paid in 2016($6600) and box two is what I was billed for 2016($3200). It is only allowing me to edit Box 1, but Box 2 is what I need to erase. How can I edit Box 2?

You need to enter the information from your 1098T exactly as it appears on the form. Delete the amount that you put in box 1 because the school did not report tuition in this box. The amount in box 2 needs to be entered in to Turbo Tax as part of your 1098T form.

Schools have the option of either reporting in box 1 or box 2. Since there is an amount in box 2, this is the amount of tuition that the school billed. For the purposes of the credit, Turbo Tax needs to know how much tuition you actually paid in 2016. Turbo Tax will ask you in a separate question, how much tuition you actually paid.

I tried including how much tuition I actually paid, but it did not increase the amount of refund I should be receiving. If the Box 1 amount is used, then I would be receiving an additional $1000 from the American Opportunity Credit, but the Box 2 amount is still being used, which screws me over.

After you enter Box 2 on the 1098-T screen, click the link "What if this is not what I paid to the school?" and enter what was paid.

That is what I did the second time around and it is giving me $1000 less than I should be receiving.

I have also made sure that any boxes that I don't have information for is blank with no zeros.

Delete the 1098-T and re-enter. report box 2 and use the link. The program should ask if you got a 1098-T in 2015 and if certain boxes were checked, Sorry AndreaG, the notification came up and I thought this was mine. Did not mean to step on your toes. Sorry again.

I've re-done it multiple times with the same result unfortunately. I even tried logging out and in again. Looks like it wasn't your question to answer, but thanks for trying to help out!
