So I don't have a 1098-T for my 18 yr old since he pays no tuition under Promise Program. However, he did have to pay for some books out of pocket. You need the FEIN number which I do HAVE since my 20yr old got his 1098-T from the school for his summer classes.
Is there a problem entering a 1098T for my 18yr old so I can claim the books? I just left all the boxes empty on 1098T page since he paid no funds straight to school.
(I will try to contact them to make sure they don't have one for him because maybe the form will show tuition and then the scholarship box might have same amount to show nothing paid out of pocket.)
Yes, that would work.
The 1098-T is an informational form, meaning you enter the information from a 1098-T so that the TurboTax program can make the calculation.
If the school did not issue a 1098-T simply because there were no excess expenses and no excess scholarships, you can enter a mock 1098-T in order to enter the book and supply expenses.
