Why do I need to complete form 3800

Turbo Tax is telling me I need to complete form 3800. I do not own a small business nor have business related expenses for a business that I own. It is telling me I cannot proceed until I complete this form, and that it won't be ready until 2/2/23.

Do you have a rental property?

Did you enter any information in regards to qualifying for any tax credits?

I do not have a rental property. The only thing we did differently this year was install an electric vehicle charging station at the house, would that be a qualifying credit?

Yes, Form 3800 is included as part of your return even though there is no business association or use.  Form 8911, which is where you will report the cost of the charging station refers back to Form 3800 even if the amount of business use is zero. Just follow the steps for form 8911 and enter zero for any business use.  For further information the links below should be of assistance.

The program says I need Form 3800, but it will not be ready until 3/06/24.  Why is the form not ready yet,

it is holding up my refund, very annoyed.  When will it be ready!!

Also, why do I need this form anyway.

Yes, I've been advised that, although the form is generally ready, some calculations that are new for 2023 are still being worked on. The IRS made updates to Form 8911 Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.

Form 3800 is needed if you have credits going on Form 8911. You can check again on or after March 6th.

If you prefer to file now, you could delete the entries in the credits section that created the forms, and if necessary delete the forms:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select "Tax Tools" and then "Tools".
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, select "Delete a form".
  4. Select "Delete" next to "8911" or another form you wish to delete, and follow the instructions.

Then, after your return has been accepted by the IRS, you could amend your return.

See this article and this one for more information on filing an amended return with TurboTax.

Any updates on the form?    I can't manually fill out all sections of the form.

The last update of which I'm aware is still tomorrow, March 6th. You might wait one more day after that for any programming changes to take effect.

March 6th is here and the promised form is NOT available.   Please  provide reasonable alternate solutions to this turbotax nightmare.

The update is scheduled for today, but sometimes they are done overnight.  I would suggest to check back tomorrow or Friday.  If you are using TurboTax Online the update will be done automatically, if you have Desktop you will have to manually do the update.

  • If using TurboTax Online: Clear your cache and cookies. See this FAQ, for your particular browser.
    • You can also try using a different browser
  • If using TurboTax Desktop: Please see this FAQ.
    • Make sure you have ran all the updates

the tax form availability site says 3800 is available.  Yet No its not.   https://form-status.app.intuit.com/tax-forms-availability/formsavailability?albRedirect=true&product=Turbotax_online&bu=cg . Something is very wrong.
