why 1099-NEC question is talking about a farm ?

I'm adding a Business 1099-NEC (Educational Service Business) and the question in TurboTax is:

"Did your receive income for this farm reported to you on Form 1099-NEC?"

It seems a bug. Nobody saw a simple bug like this?

The business version is expensive and a basic section is incorrect. What do I pay for?

No, it is not a bug. The program just wants (needs) to know if it is in relation to a farm in any way as these forms are new and they system wants (needs) to know if it should generate a Schedule F for you.

Thank you for your reply but if I said No to this question, it is back to the initial menu (Update button...to add 1099-NEC)  and I do NOT see any other way to enter a 1099-NEC.

Any suggestion?

The only way I found it is to say Yes...even it is not related to a farm.

Let's try to enter the 1099-NEC this way:

In TurboTax online,

  • Open your tax return, select Pick up where you left off
  • From the upper right menu, select Search and type in 1099nec and Enter
  • Select the Jump to 1099nec
  • Follow prompts

Then

  • From the upper right menu, select Search and type in schedule c and Enter
  • Select the Jump to schedule c
  • Next screen, "Your 2020 work summary" under your self employed business, select Review
  • Continue to enter related expenses and other required information

The net profit amount will show on line 8 of Schedule 1 and Form 1040.

Using the response Yes, I checked the results on the FORM and it didn't add anything for Schedule F ( No Schedule F generated). It just added a link to Schedule C  (with the business title). The amount is also well reported on Schedule C section 1099-NEC.

It makes sense as this menu to enter 1099-NEC is inside the menu Schedule C, Form 1099-MISC.

So for me it is a bug (copy/paste of the question from the section farm which I don't use).

It is indeed a bug whether TurboTax is willing to accept it or not. This wasn’t a solution to easily enter the information from 1099-NEC. Additionally, the steps you mentioned didn’t provide the “Jump to link” it only refers to it. TurboTax wasn’t prepared for the new 1099-NEC. Thanks to the person who posted the question as it helped a little. I didn’t understand why the question only talked about farm income and then took me back to the previous screen when I said no. Very disappointed.

I am attaching an image of the "jump to link".  You need to click on the blue link to get into the 1099-NEC section.

This is currently happening to me right now with cash app tax software.

I am also in Cash App Tax software. There doesn't seem to be any way around it; I cannot tell it the 1099-NEC is not from farm income.

Farms are treated like small businesses, so their income is reported on Form 1099-NEC. However, farm income goes on Schedule F, not Schedule C. That's why TurboTax is asking this question.

As long as you don't select "I owned a farm" on the "Does one of these uncommon situations apply?" screen your income won't be reported as farm income.

Did you ever figure it out?

Are you Self-Employed?  If so, you will enter info about your Business, then add your 1099-NEC as Business Income in the Self-Employed Income and Expenses section, which will be reported on Schedule C.  If this applies, here's more info on Form 1099-NEC and Reporting Self Employment Income

If not, and received a one-time payment reported on a 1099-NEC, you can add it to your return as Miscellaneous Income.

  • On the Income Topics page, scroll all the way down to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C, choose Start/Update.
  • On the next page, scroll all the way to Other Reportable Income, say Yes to Other Taxable Income
  • On the next page, enter a description of the Income and Amount
