In box 14 of my W-2 there are 3 separate numbers. Preceding one of the numbers is ORSTT W/H which is the state transportation tax that I paid. The other two numbers have no letters or code preceding them however one of the numbers matches the amount of my total net wages (W-2 box 1). The other is a smaller number that could be the union dues I paid last year. Turbo Tax is asking for a description of these amounts but I have nothing to put down. Did my employer omit some necessary information on my W-2? Do I just ignore those numbers?
Box 14 is used by employers to report any information that does not belong in any other boxes or just miscellaneous information. Most of what is reported on Box 14 has no impact on your tax return.
In TurboTax, enter the description from your W-2's box 14 on the first field in the row. Enter the dollar amount and select the correct tax category that goes with that description. If none of the categories apply, scroll to the bottom of the list and choose Other (not classified). If box 14 is blank, just skip over it. Don't enter a 0 for any blank boxes. If there is no description just enter Other or ignore those entries.
