I operated a rideshare business for a portion of 2024, in Nevada. This was my third year operating the business. I am taking the standard mileage deduction (as I did in year 1 and year 2). My understanding of the standard mileage deduction is that I cannot deduct expenses like the garage rental for my rideshare car, cell phone costs, etc. However, the TurboTax software allows me to add all of my expenses in addition to my miles and says everything looks good. Am I incorrect with what the standard mileage deduction includes? Thank you. Sending good energy your way.
Your cell phone cost is not related to the standard mileage rate and can be claimed to the extent that the phone was used for your business.
The standard mileage rate is meant to include the cost of fuel, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and depreciation.
Expenses not included in the items covered by the standard mileage rate may be deducted as a business expense. This would include parking fees, tolls, and garage rental when incurred for business purposes.
