Looks like we've run into an error.

TurboTax 2024 Premier worked fine five days ago. I tried to open today and the program will not open. Displays, "Looks like we've run into an error." I uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Nothing seems to work.

I saw the topic in two different posts. One for an old operating system and the other when importing documents. My problem is different. Same error message, but TurboTax opened and worked fine five days ago. Today I get the error message when I try to open it. Not trying to import documents and Windows 10 is up to date and worked fine with TurboTax five days ago. How is my situation a duplicate? Please direct me to the other responses if they address the same issue. Thank you.

Same issue.  Simply starting the program for the first time.   Anxious to see how it can be resolved.

I figured out my problem. First TurboTax opened and ran fine. Then I installed some new software and could not open TurboTax, even after uninstalling the other software. I restored Windows to a point in time before the other software was installed and when TurboTax worked. Now TurboTax opens and works again. There were two other different posts for the same error, but each of those problems were different than mine. If you just installed TurboTax and the program does not open, my first inclination would be to uninstall and reinstall TurboTax, and to check to see if there are any Windows or other system updates. Good luck and hopefully your problem is resolved soon.

Thanks.  Yeah, first thing I did was uninstall and reinstall.  No help.   I have to wonder if it is a windows update that caused the problem.    I'll look to see what I have for restore points.

same issue here.

Based on the date of the downloaded executable, I had installed Turbotax Deluxe Desktop on 12/18.   This week it produced the error on startup.  "Looks like we've run into an error.  We're sorry but we need to close TurboTax......"   I've uninstalled and reinstalled, no help.   Paused my anti virus and firewall per a TT FAQ, no help.   I looked for a Windows restore point to go back to, but there is only one a few days ago.  I've installed no other software since 12/18.    I do see that Windows 11 update installed version 24H2 on 12/19.   I have to wonder if that is the issue??

Hopefully TurboTax Admin can help with this.

I too believe that this is an issue since installing 24H2. That is the only change I made to my PC between TurboTax running and getting this generic error.

I also tried uninstalling Virus software etc.

Today (1/2/25) I downloaded the latest installer from TurboTax and tried again with no success.

Let's hope they are working on a fix.

I had this problem before and after 24H2. Never have got the program to work on this computer, but I have got it to work on another Windows 11 computer with 24H2. The version is not the issue. This computer is my main computer I use for everything and has a lot more programs installed. This tells me there is some sort of incompatibility with other programs. Have no idea which one or more it could be.  Turbo Tax needs to get involved here ASAP!

Thanks for the information about 24H2. Armed with this, I started to do some more tests. Although I cannot be 100% sure, I am fairly sure that uninstalling "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) - 14.40.33810" and installing the latest "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) - 14.42.34433" seemed to be the secret sauce.

I am now back up and running

I think the problem all along was a corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) - 14.40.33810 program. I did a repair, restarted and now Turbo Tax is working! Installing the latest version is going to work also.  Thanks darryls50 for leading us in the right direction.

I had the exact same issue and running a repair on the Microsoft Visual C++ 20-15-2022 Redistrubutable (x64) - 14.40.33810 version fixed my problem.  I didn't want to remove any of the Redistributable software, since I wasn't sure what it would break, so I went though each one installed on my laptop, ran the repair, rebooted and tested TurboTax.  It failed everytime, except after I repaired the one mentioned above.

Thanks everyone for your posts that pointed me to the correct solution.

MANY THANKS TO ALL!

Repair of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) - 14.40.33810 did the trick for me.   I did not have to uninstall/reinstall

My steps

Control Panel

Programs and featuers

Scroll down to the Microsoft Redistributable and highlight

Select Change up towards the top and then repair.

I don't see an option to "Repair" the VC++ Redistributable (I also had 14.40.33810), so I downloaded and installed the latest version (14.42) from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170 and that fixed the problem.

I chatted with TTax support.  They refuse to take any responsibility to attempt a fix to work with the new Win 11 Pro 24H2 version.  They are waiting on Microsoft to make some change.  I have little to no hope that this will get fixed during early tax season.   btw this is only an issue with Win 11 PRO. TTax works ok with Win 11 HOME version.   Luckily for me I have a laptop with Win 11 Home that where I can run TTax without error.

Awful support, or lack of engineering skills, from TTax in that they won't even attemt a fix.

I had 2 version of the Visual C++ feature.  I had to delete the older version and then repair the later 14.40.33810.  That also seems to have fixed the issue.  Unless I missed some notice from Ttax support, it's amazing that TTax could not figure this out.

I still maintain this has been awful support from TTax.   Thx for the solution!!

I had the same problem with the wrong version of c++. Wasted 4+ hours. Why oh why, would the TT installer install the wrong version of c++? It checks that you have c++. It asks your permission to install c++. And then it installs a version that the software won't work with. I've been using TT for at least a decade, but this stupidity will have me looking at alternatives next year.

I have Virtual C++ 2015-2022 14.42.34433.0 Redist. (x64) and still keep getting "Hmm, looks like we've hit a snag. We recommend you revisit the last topic you were working on to make sure all your info's correct" when trying to enter into sections - Divs, Int., Cap Gains, and more. I've "revisited" over and over again and there are no errors. I can enter some topics but not others. Happens in all 3 of the returns I'm working on, so I'm not making errors in all 3.  "Premier" downloaded from TT in Dec.  I Really Need Help here.  Thank you!

uninstalling "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) - 14.40.33810" and installing the latest "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) - 14.42.34433" worked for me.

Downloaded Turbo Tax 2024 today Jan24-2025 did not launch before but with the updated Redistributable (x64) all is working and I was able to open TurboTax 2024. Thankyou for your help

This problem came back again.  I did the repair as described, and it seems to be working.   Can Intuit please address this issue?

Mine is still working and Turbo Tax did an update.  Not sure if that helps.

I've been trying to get this to work for 2 hours.  I get it installed "successfully" but when I try to open it I get the error message as above.  Never even got to the point of putting in my license code.  I have tried to repair/reinstall but that didn't work.   I uninstalled, cleaned all my files, hard booted and redownloaded and still getting the error message.  Tried the C++ repair and that didn't work.  Should I uninstall, do the repair and then redownload again???  I am concerned with uninstalling the C++ and then figuring out how to reinstall it as I'm not a computer genius at all and don't want to crash the system.  BTW, I am running Win10 with Norton and Malwarebytes.  So this is not only a Win11 problem.  I have been using TT for probably 15 years or more and never, ever had these kinds of problems with using a CD instead of downloading only.
