I received a W-2 with two states (NY and PA) in box 15 with the same amount of earned income, however I believe this is incorrect as all of the income was earned in NY. The address listed on the W-2 is that of my parents (PA) as it has been my permanent residence until last year when I moved to NY to attend a graduate school. I have been renting an apartment in NY to attend school the entire year and intend to stay. Therefore, I intend to file as a full year NY resident.
One of my employers (out of three) listed PA in box 15, with a different state I.D. number probably due to the fact that my previous residence in PA is listed instead of my current NY address. Would I be allowed to enter $0 for PA instead of the same amount of income for NY? Also, would I be allowed to omit this if I am not filing as a PA resident?
Thank you for your help!
Yes, that is how should enter it in TurboTax. You will not need to file a PA return.
However, since the PA tax dept gets a copy of the W-2 with the income shown as PA source, there is a chance you will be hearing from them. But there's nothing you can do, short of getting a corrected W-2, to head that off.
