How to add explantion to a 1041 and 1040?

I have a 1099-R for my deceased father.  I want to enter the amount prior to death on the 1040 and the remaining amount on the 1041.  I need to add a statement explaining why the amounts are different to what the 1099-R has.  Can I add a explanation statement to the 1041?  Can I add a explanation statement to the 1040?

No.  You may not add or enter any comments on your Federal Income Tax return.  You can mail a letter of explanation along with a copy of your Forms 1040 and 1041  to the IRS.
