You can delete this input line for any non-applicable miscellaneous business expenses in the Federal interview section.

  1. Select Income & Expenses
  2. Select Self-employment income and expenses
  3. On the screen titled Your 2020 self-employed work summary, select edit to the right of the applicable business activity.
  4. On the next page, you will be able to edit expenses.
  5. Scroll down to and select Edit to the right of Miscellaneous expenses.
  6. On the next page titled Let's enter the miscellaneous expenses for your business work, select the trash can to the right of the expenses that no longer applies.

If you are unable to delete, go ahead and enter a few characters and amounts, and then select the trash can to delete the input.  This should remove the input and allow you to proceed with your return.

You may have uploaded your business expenses from Quickbooks and had an item classified as Miscellaneous Expense or you started a line item but didn't enter the amount.

To delete or correct your Misc Exp on your Schedule C in TurboTax Online please follow these steps:

  1. Within your tax return use the magnifying glass icon to search for Schedule C
  2. Click the Jump to link
  3. Click Edit for the line of work
  4. Scroll down to Expenses and click Edit for Other miscellaneous expenses and make any corrections

2 ERROR MESSAGES:  (1) Schedule C:  Other expenses text is invalid.  Please remove all preceding spaces or invalid characters.     (2)  Schedule C:  Misc. exp. must be entered .  The form has no information entered.

Error message (1) When information is entered in the easy step entry, information is not entered on form.

Error message (2) Even when no description or amount is entered for misc exp, the error message will not clear.

What's up??

Gee I am a Turbo Tax deluxe or paid the top price user.

I too have been hit with this issue of the Misc Exp Other. TurboTax will not accept 10.00 or 0.0 or 0 or blank. It does not explain the error. As a retired software engineer this stinks like a software bug. I Went here to find help and it appears to be the blind leading the blind. Where the f'ing TurboTax customer support. User pay and then get chance to provide support to other users in need so turbotax execs can get bigger earnings???

I have the same problem and I'm sorry to say, don't have a solution.  I don't expect a fix real soon.

I bumped into this issue today. It turned out I had used the line item misc expenses last year but opted to use the itemized list instead now and there is no need for this misc expense line which populates itself by default awaiting entries if you do not delete them. I just deleted these blank line items (hit the trash button) and the error is gone.

There is no solution for this. I read a lot of complaints about this bug/glitch in the software. Now I am trying to cancel my subscription and file through other software. It seems that will be also long. long wat to get any support about canceling.

same nonsense explanation for years and TurboTax doesn't mind fixing it. Turbotax, please refund all the fees that I've paid to you for the last couple of years!

Like this isn't complicated enough, right? No explanation about what I am supposed to do here. This is what we get for trying to pay our taxes!

Sometimes this message happens if you had expenses in that category in a prior year but not this year.  The category transfers in from the prior year but there are not numerical entries.

Please go into your Schedule C and check the Other miscellaneous expenses.  You may remember those expenses for 2022 but if they are not valid again this year, just backspace over the category.

This explanation doesn't match or apply to 2022 Home and Business version.  No help.

I'm a couple years after this was posted, but it's still an issue.  I was frustrated as I'm using 2022 Home & Business version and I couldn't figure out the cause and my screen didn't match the "trash can" explanation below.

Instead, I found the problem mostly to be user error by switching to Forms view so I could see Sch C.  I had used two lines to describe a Misc Expense Other... the 2nd line was just further explanation, but any entry on the form in the description (first) column necessitates something in the 2nd column (dollars), and zero (0) wouldn't cut it.

To solve, I made sure I had no extra or blank lines on the form.  Two entries?  Description on rows 1 and 2.  Then for the amount I went to the Cmd-I submenu, made sure to check the Don't Print option and entered the amount and my extra lines of explanation.  I confused myself since I use this Cmd-I screen A LOT throughout the program to leave myself careful notes on exactly where the amount comes from so I'm not sweating bullets if I need to confirm in the future. (It also helps the following year to include anything tricky that was hard-earned knowledge.

After cleaning up the formal Sch C and moving my notes to the "amount" Cmd-I subform, the program was happy and I was happy so I could push the button and submit.

I clicked on live chat. Then clicked on "Talk to live Person".

Make sure its the chat and NOT "Live Tax Help".

I clicked for them to call me. After about a minute or so, an agent called. She ultimately had to view my computer while I entered 0 in the box. It then let me finish filing my taxes.

I'm no expert, but here's the path i used.

-- Business tab

-- I'll choose what I work on

-- Business income and expenses (Update button)

-- <your business> (Edit button)

-- Business expenses/Other common business expenses subheading (Update button)

-- Other miscellaneous expense, at bottom (Update button)

-- Click the Forms button at the top middle of the window

-- scroll way down to where you find that section.  Your entries should be in blue font (at least they are on my screen.

-- follow instructions from my previous post.  Basically, one line of description has one non-zero value.  Check there's no "trash" characters on supposedly empty lines.
