For the 2021 stimulus payment, you need to be looking for the Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return.

To access the screen to enter your stimulus payment in TurboTax Desktop is to do the following:

  1. Open your tax return in TurboTax.
  2. Search for Recovery Rebate Credit using the magnifying glass near the top of the screen on the right.
  3. Click the Jump to recovery rebate credit link.
  4. Answer the question regarding the payment you received or did not receive.

Thank. I won't let me see the return, it only gives me the option to file. I don't want to file and then find out I missed out on it.

Form 3911 is not part of a tax return and therefore, is not supported by TurboTax.

This link to the IRS Refund Inquiries has directions on completing Form 3911.

You can view your Form 1040 before you file. See the following FAQ for instructions. The Recovery Rebate Credit is on Form 1040 line 30.

How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?

The status of your third stimulus payment is not clear. If the IRS did not send you any third stimulus payment at all because your 2020 (or 2019) income was too high, Form 3911 is not applicable. If your 2021 income is low enough to make you eligible, you simply claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return.

Form 3911 is used in cases where the IRS did send you a payment, but you didn't get it, or it was lost, stolen, or destroyed. In such situations you would file Form 3911 to initiate a trace of the payment.

If the IRS did send you a payment, you must enter in TurboTax the amount that they sent, as if you received it, even if you didn't actually receive it. If you claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for money that the IRS already sent, even if you didn't get the payment, your tax return will be pulled aside for manual processing and your refund will be significantly delayed.

To get to the stimulus questions in TurboTax at any time, you can search for stimulus or recovery rebate credit then hit ENTER and there should be a Jump to link

If you are trying to trigger it,

Click on Other Tax Situations at top

Click on Let's get started

Answer some questions then Continue

Then click on Let's keep going

Next screen is for the Third Stimulus, if you qualify

If you did not get prompted to enter your stimulus information, that means you either:

  1. Filed as a dependent being claimed on another tax return, or
  2. have an AGI too high to claim the recovery rebate

In order to get the recovery rebate credit  for the 3rd EIP ("stimulus") you have to file a 2021 tax return.   Go to Federal Review and answer the questions for the recovery rebate credit.   The credit will go on line 30 of your tax form.
