A home office is deductible if you are self-employed and use a portion of your home as an office.  In order to enter this into TurboTax you will need to go to the 'Business Items' section under 'Wages and Income' on your federal return.

You're going to click 'Start' next to 'Business Income and Expenses (Sch C)' and then enter all of the information about your business.  There are quite a few questions to walk through here - the type of business  and the income that you had - and once you have entered all of that you will come to business expenses.

The last line under business expenses is 'Home office expenses'.  You'll enter all the information about your home office here.

You'll need to tell the system how big your home office is so you should figure that out before you start.  You need the square footage of your home office as well as the square footage of your entire home.

Then you'll need to enter the percentage of time that you use the home office for business as well as the number of months in the year that you used the home office.  Once you have done that you'll have the option to take the simplified deduction (which is the standard amount based on the size of your office that the IRS has determined you will deduct) or you will be able to enter all of the expenses for your home including mortgage interest, property taxes, insurance, utilities and repairs and maintenance.  You will need to figure the percentages on these so that you can enter the proper deductions for just the home office portion of your home.

Once that is done the system will compute the best possible home office deduction for you going forward.
