Hi. I have entered all my 1099-nec info using the "jump to schedule c" link and when I go to e-file I am getting an error saying that "A link to Schedule C" is needed

I received and followed these instuctions:

Use these steps to go to the Schedule C section of your return.
On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
This opens a box where you can type in “schedule c” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
The search results will give you an option to “Jump to schedule c”
Click on the blue “Jump to schedule c” link
If you already have a Schedule C in your return, edit it and go to the section to Add Income.  This is where you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC.

If you do not already have a Schedule C in your return, follow the prompts and enter the information about your work/business for which you received the Form 1099-NEC.  Then continue through that section to Add Income and enter the Form 1099-NEC plus any other income you received for that self-employed business.

Don't forget you can also claim expenses related to your business.

After you are finished, the error condition should be eliminated.

The error condition is not eliminated. I am getting the same error message. It is sayin that "a link to Schedule C is something we need to get your info to the right place" it then also indicates that there is a blank 1099-NEC that needs info entered. What else can I do? seems to be a software glitch

It depends. It sounds like you used the wrong sequence of steps to enter your information. My suggestion is to go to your forms mode and delete all of your 1099-NEC and schedule C forms to begin again with a clean copy. If there is a Schedule SE, delete that as well. Once you delete these forms, here is the correct sequence of steps to perform to get you back on the right track in your CD/Download product.

  1. Open Turbo Tax. Stay in the step-by-step interview mode.
  2. Select Business>business income and expenses>choose what I work on.
  3. Business income and Expenses>profit and loss from business>start
  4. The next few screens are questions asking you about your business. Here is where you build your business profile.
  5. Once your profile is built, then you will reach a screen simply entitled your business.
  6. Next go to business>business income>
  7. Next you will see 1099-NEC.  This should be the only place you should report this. After the 1099-NEC is reported, you will go back to the your business screen, here you can start reporting your business expenses. As you are entering this information, the program is creating a Schedule C with all of this information being included.
  8. By entering information like the way you did in the beginning, you created a 1099-NEC and a Schedule C with no links to either one. The method I described will link both.

Thanks for your response. Does this mean I also need to delete all my income and expenses and start from scratch? Or is it just the 1099-NEC income information? The first time I went in and deleted all my 1099-NECs and did the "jump to schedule C" thing.  but I also have additional income reported. (not w-2)

I have entered all the income information multiple times and my expense information is fairly detailed - so having to re-input all of that I only want to do if it's going to work so I would love to ensure that I'm doing it correctly and appreciate any guidance you can give.

Try to delete the 1099-NEC first and then reenter using the steps I described in my last post.

  • Before you delete it, go to forms>Schedule C>make note of the income on line 1G of the Schedule C.
  • Enter the 1099-NEC as I described in steps 6-7 in my previous post.
  • Go back to Schedule C again to see if the income from the 1099-NEC increased. There also should be an entry in 1A for 1099-NEC income also.

Thanks so much for your response. I am using the Self-Employed online version. Please forgive me if this is an idiotic question but I'm not sure where to access " forms>Schedule C>"? Interestingly, I just tried deleting the form completely and adding the income under additional income and when I go to file It is throwing the same error code. screenshots below. So basically the entry it's asking me to check no longer exists...

I apologize. I thought you were in the downloaded version of Turbo Tax. You won't be able to access forms>Schedule C.

  1. Do this instead.  Go to the bottom left of your screen, go to tax tools>tools>delete a form>delete 1099-NEC. leave the Schedule C intact for now.
  2. Delete all 1099-NEC worksheets as well as the 1099 NEC forms, if they still exist.
  3. Remove the income you reported as other income.
  4. Now add the 1099-NEC back in as I described in steps 6-7 earlier.
  5. Let me know how this works.
