Doordash

Hello,

I door dash in California and the vehicle I use is in my fathers name. I pay for everything related to the vehicle including sending my dad the money for the payment/insurance, gas, maintenance, tires this year, oil changes, and tags. I know I can’t claim mileage but what can I do? This really hurt my taxes last year.

You are correct that you can't take standard miles on a vehicle that you do not own, however, you can still take actual expenses. You will still need to enter the total miles vs the business use miles. Also, you will not be able to depreciate the vehicle.

Please see this LINK for more information regarding standard miles vs actual expenses.
