My 1099-MISC Worksheet does not have a number for box 17. I asked the individual who gave me the 1099-MISC and has never seen this issue pop up on intuit. Am I okay to leave it blank or do I need to get this number? If so, how?
Turbotax software wouldn't let me e-file without filling out box 17. But box 17 on my 1099MISC is left blank. Help!
Yes, you are okay to leave all those state boxes blank. That number is only required if you had state income taxes withheld from that payment.
I had a blank box 17, but TT was not able to efile. It kept going back to blank field in Box 17 of the 1099-MISC worksheet. I called TT Tech Support and we discovered that if there are any amounts entered in boxes 16-18, including "0.00" type entries, delete them from the 1099-MISC worksheet first. Otherwise, the blank Box 17 won't work with efiling. 2017.
I am having a similar problem for filing for 2018. Box 17 has UT followed by 9 numbers, and no 'WTH', which TT says it needs. Box 18 is not blank (it matches the amount in Box 7), but Box 16 (the state tax withheld) is $0.00. Based on the answer from TurboTaxDawnC, above, it sounds like I can just clear Boxes 16-18 since Box 16 indicates no state tax was withheld. Is this true?
Yes, you can clear boxes 16-18. The important box is #16. If there are amounts in there, that means the issuer withheld amounts which are credits on your tax return. You want all of your credits, but if there is no amount in Box 16, no state taxes were withheld so no credits are due. That doesn't mean you don't owe state tax, it just means nothing was withheld. You will still owe the tax when you complete your state return (UT), but clearing out those boxes will allow you to e-file. If there were an amount in Box 16, you would need the box 17 information to get credit for the tax ''paid''.
