I imported1099 info from Charles Schwab from inside TurboTax. TurboTax did not include Schedule D and checked the "not required" box. After filing, IRS sent letter asking me to complete and return a Schedule D to support the entry on Schedule 1 line 13. I should not have to manually translate data from my Schwab 1099 to to correct lines on Schedule D. That's why I buy TurboTax. How can I force TurboTax to complete Schedule D even though it thinks it is not required?
Ok ... lets start from square one ... if you only have cap gains on the 1099-DIV then you do not have to file a Sch D ... the entry is only made on line 13 of the Sch 1 ... those are the IRS rules on the subject. Now ... do you have any stock sales on the 1099-B to report ?
I agree. I do not have any stock sales. I only have capital gain distributions. So Schedule D should not be required. That's also what TurboTax did. But the fact is that the IRS sent me a letter requiring me to "complete Schedule D with information that supports [the value] on line13, Schedule 1." So I have no choice but to fill out the three or so lines on Schedule D and send it anyway. I was hoping to simply force Turbo Tax to populate one rather than me having to do it. I have now done it manually. The way I read the instructions for Schedule D, the value from Schedule 1 line 13 simply appears on lines 13, 15, and 16 of Schedule D. That's it. There is nothing else to put on Schedule D since I have nothing else to report. So the IRS wanting Schedule D in order to support the number appearing on Schedule 1 line 13 seems really stupid. I don't think they know their own rules. But you can't argue with the IRS.
Well they are nitwits sometimes ... so give them what they want ...filling it in manually was one option ... the other is to switch to the FORMS mode and enter Sch D in the search box then print it from the window.
That is, Schedule D is already there (filled out), you just have to "open it" in the forms mode.
Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for. I did not realize TurboTax filled in the non-required forms. I printed the TurboTax version and it is exactly as I had figured it out - same number in three places and a couple of check boxes. Nothing else. They are nitwits sometimes. THANKS AGAIN.
