As a nonprofit, should we issue 1099s to an tournament group having checks made out to an individual?

I am a nonprofit ball team and we typically pay to enter tournaments, etc.  One of the tournament groups we typically enter has us make the checks out to the individual organizing the tournaments.  He states he does not need a 1099 because he is merely collecting money from the teams to pay umpires, fields, etc. and his organization is a nonprofit.  He has had no one press him to issue a 1099 in 20 years and is offended we suggested it.  He will not give us the social security number. Should we issue one? If so, how with no social security number?

you have at least one problem, you don't have his SSN. do you have his name even      you could send him a W-9 (using address of his charity) but I'll bet he won't return it.  could he have kept the money rather than turning it over to his N P.  possibly.    next time make the check out only to the charity.  and you may want to check IRS website to see if charity is registered.    it would be easy for me to say I have a charity-  XYZ Foundation - when in fact I'm the charity. thanks for the money.

TT does not support non-profit tax returns.

Checks should be written to the non profit agency that he is running, not to an individual.....he could keep all the money for himself.

That is issue.  But we cannot enter tournaments unless we make it out to him.  He has us captive and I want to be sure we can follow what is required.  I am concerned he is keeping the money but do not have a way around this one.  He will not give the full name of the nonprofit.
