1099MISC $8100 in box 3. Don't want Schedule C.

Still need help with a 1099MISC with $8100 in box 3. TT insists that I need a Schedule C even though the money was part of my wife's pension meant to pay for her health care insurance.

Generally, box 7 is self-employment income. Box 3 "can" be self employment income. It depends on why you were paid the money. So why were you paid the money?

Reporting 1099-MISC (box 3 or box 7) that is not self-employment income

Under the Wages & Income tab (or Personal Income tab) scroll down to Other Common Income and elect to start/update Income from form 1099-MISC. Then click YES to indicate you have a 1099-MISC.

Enter the 1099-MISC exactly as printed, and then Continue.

Enter the reason you got this money – be it scholarship, bonus, streaking butt naked across the 50 yard line of the super bowl, whatever. Then continue.

Select None of these apply, then Continue.

Select No, it didn’t involve work….. and Continue.

Select ONLY the tax year for which this specific 1099-MISC was issued. Do not select the year that you received the 1099. Select the year for which the 1099-MISC was issued. Select no other year. Then Continue.

Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money, then Continue.

Select NO, then Continue.

Click the DONE button, and that does it.

No, if entered correctly, this will not be Schedule C income.

Go to Wages & Income > I'll Choose What I Want To Work ON

Then go to 1099-MISC

Enter the 1099 and make sure you answer the interview questions like I have in the images below

I'm sorry my answer was not helpful. I just did the exact process in my download program and the income was put on Line 21 of the 1040 where it should go as "other income". Can I help you further?

Line 21 of the 1040? Are you sure? Line 21 is labeled "Amount of line 19 you want applied to your 2019 estimated taxes."

It does show up as it should on line 21 of the SCH 1 (not the 1040) when I use the procedure I posted above.

@Carl Ooops, still stuck in the old 1040. But I think you knew that.

Are we all on the same page? When I go to form 1040 line 21 is not "Other income" I have "Amount of over payment on line 19"

On the new return, it's Line 21, but it is now called Schedule 1 of the return.

@aplandjim Line 21 of the 1040 was other income for many years, but tax reform changed it to Schedule 1 starting this year.

I was confused myself actually, until it crossed my mind (after posting the above of course!) to check the Schedules.

OK so now I run the Federal Review and get 11 errors...all about Schedule C. What is the name of the business and what is it's address and so on.

You may have it in as a duplicate now. Do you show the $8100 on Schedule 1, Line 21? Let's check that first.

Save yourself a bit of time. Since you're using the desktop version, I know exactly what you need to do.
Under the personal income tab scroll down to Business Items and elect to start/update Business Income & Expenses (SCH C). You'll come to a summary screen that will "list" the business, and it will have an EDIT and a DELETE button to the right of it. Click DELETE, then YES to confirm the deletion, and you "MUST" continue working through until you come to a screen with a DONE button on it, and click that DONE button. Your deletion doesn't "stick" until you click that DONE button.
