Hi,
We received a forgivable loan from a University and this was reported on a 1099-MISC.
All these funds were used for a new non-profit organization (NCC) in the same tax year. The non-profit organization is not an LLC.
Is this income considered ordinary income? Also, do we consider the NCC a "business", and report the income accordingly. Or, is this income to be reported under the charity portion of the tax return? Or, is there another form we need to fill out.
Thank you.
Greg
Yes, you report the income. It's important for you to select 'None of these apply" and then you should also select the following:
This will report the income without any business activity and it will show up on Form 1040, Line 8 (From Schedule 1, Line 8z).
If the nonprofit organization is eligible for tax deductible donations then you can enter the amount as a charitable donation on Schedule A. If they are a 501(c)(3) organization then it should be tax deductible. You can use the search link below, however if they are new they may not yet be on it.
Hi Diane,
I appreciate your response.
Does the 1099-MISC income get reported under a new "business" (i.e. do I need to add a new business for the non-profit, then report the 1099-MISC income there?)
Also, I don't see where I select 'None of these apply.' Of course I'm using TurboTax, but I also do not see where I click 'No' for questions number 2 and 3 that you mention in your response.
It seems like a may be using a different program or form. I've used this Tax software for a few years, so I'm frustrated as to why I can't figure this out.
I appreciate your help.

When you add the income as a Form 1099-MISC those questions will come up. Since you are not in business from a forgiven loan.
A nonprofit is a separate entity from yourself if you have filed the appropriate paper work. A nonprofit organization is required to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ..
