We are still waiting for IRS guidance regarding updating or providing direct deposit information for the stimulus payments and how they will be distributed to these type of accounts. We will have more information once the government finalizes the details.

I can't be claimed as a dependent, but my 2019 federal tax return that I already received, is checked as: I can be claimed as a dependent. Does this disqualify me in receiving a stimulus check? Even though I was not claimed as a dependent from anyone. It was a mistake my boss made when she filled it out for me at my most recent job. Do I need to amend the return i already received or will I receive the stimulus check since legally i cannot be claimed/did not get claimed on any other tax return? Thank you!

If you checked that you can  be claimed as a dependent then you will not receive the stimulus payment.  If you cannot be claimed as a dependent , meaning you do not meet the qualifications of a dependent, then you should amend your return.  If you don't qualify as a qualifying child, you may qualify as a qualifying relative.

Qualifying child

  • The child can be your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, adopted child or an offspring of any of them.

  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

  • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

  • They are younger than you and under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.

  • They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

  • They did not provide more than half of their own support.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you.

  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

  • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

  • They lived with you the entire year or they were related to you.

  • They made less than $4,200 in 2019.

  • You provided more than half of their financial support.
