I am using a paid version of TurboTax, but Intuit as an e-file provider chooses to only support e-file for 6 months (October 15)after after the tax year the return is due rather than the 2 years the IRS supports for e-filing if it's within two years from the original due date of the return. Why does Intuit not support what the IRS supports?
One of the primary reasons why I choose to pay for software tax preparation is so that I may electronically file for the same obvious reasons and benefits inherent for those doing so by October 15?
Please do not half ass the response, I've been a paying customer for over 20 years and believe an honest question warrants an accurate and reasoned response. Please respond to email@donrileyjr.com and thank you for your response
Prior year returns can only be filed electronically by registered tax preparers, and only when the Modernized e-File System is available. You are not a registered tax preparer so TurboTax cannot allow you to efile a return after the filing date extension period. A paid professional who is a registered tax preparer can prepare and efile your return.
If my AGI wasn't over the allowed individual limit I could e-file on the IRS web site. Based on that fact alone, invalidates the reasoning provided that Intuit is precluded from allowing customers to e-file a prayer your return. So, I ask what IRS Publication or ruling is the support basis for the position Intuit is precluded from allowing its customer's to e-file prior year federal return.
Just out of curiosity, if I WAS a 'registered' tax professional I obviously would not be using TurboTax to e-file my client's taxes so what e-file service would I likely be using so I can e-file my return?
Here is how you become an authorized efile provider to be able to efile prior year tax returns: https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/frequently-asked-questions-e-file-requirements-for-specified-tax-return-preparers-sometimes-referred-to-as-the-e-file-mandate
You would have to purchase one of the professional tax preparation programs such Intuit's ProSeries to be able to efile prior year tax returns: https://proconnect.intuit.com/proseries/pricing-main/
