Why do I get a 1040-V indicating I need to pay when I filed an amended return? The amended return says I don't owe anything.

I had to file an amended return because my broker sent a corrected 1099-DIV . The difference is only $1 so there wasn't any change in what I owed. Turbotax online said I don't owe, but still indicate I should pay with a 1040-V, not sure what this is about.

The Form 1040-V is only for and can only be used on the original tax return,

not

the amended return.

If taxes are owed on an amended return it can only be paid with a check mailed with the return to the IRS or use the IRS payment website.

If the amended return has a tax refund the refund can only be paid by the IRS sending a check in the mail to the address on the amended return.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X.

Thanks to those who responded ... I was guess I was expecting Turbotax to be (naturally or artificially) intelligent enough to figure out what is still owed and print the 1040-V only for what is owed. After posting my query, I took another look at the amended return and figured the 1040-V is most likely for the return that was already filed.
