Why can't I amend yet? TurboTax keeps pushing the date and I really need help amending ASAP. I accidentally filed 2017 w2 in place of 2018 w2.

First,  I suspect Turbotax is prioritizing issues affecting new filers rather than the amended return.  This board is not official customer support and we don't know anything different than the published schedule.

Second, Turbotax has a habit of releasing updates late in the stated day.  (I have suggested that they should make the official day the day after, in that case, but they didn't take the suggestion.)  So it may be available later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Third, an amended return is a complete full tax return with all required schedules and attachments containing the corrected information, PLUS the form 1040X cover sheet that summarizes the changes.  If you only mail a 1040X the IRS will send it back without processing it.  If you believe you would rather generate your entire new correct tax return on your own, go ahead.  There is also no rush, you have 3 years to file an amended return to claim an additional refund, and if you owe additional tax, there will be no interest or late fees as long as you mail it by April 15.

So basically just make an entire new tax return & then attach the 1040x from the irs website? They have put my original return on hold because of my mistake. Also does anyone know if I have to specify somewhere specific exactly what mistake I made on the return so to not have any penalties? Thank-you in advance

Are you sure the IRS is asking for an amended return?  If they are holding up your first tax return, they may want a corrected form without an amendment, or they may just want you to send a missing form.   What exactly did they say is wrong with the first return?  And how are you going to make an amended return if you don't know the problem?

Amending appears to be available online as of 4pm EST this afternoon (March 7), but I would not amend until you have a better idea of what you are supposed to do.

Also note that amended returns take about 4 months to process.
