WHERE IS MY REFUND!!?

I’m starting to get very agitated as I went in my return on January 31st.. got a letter saying I needed to fill out and 8962, I sent that in on March 31st. It’s now almost august and still nothing and the irs website says “we’re still processing”.. I called weeks ago and they said they had gotten my paperwork so WHY DO I NOT HAVE MY MONEY!? Times are tough right now through this pandemic. Will they pay me interest?

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-statement-on-interest-payments

Interest on individual 2019 refunds reflected on returns filed by July 15, 2020 will generally be paid from April 15, 2020 until the date of the refund. Interest payments may be received separately from the refund. By law, the interest rate on both overpayment and underpayment of tax is adjusted quarterly. The interest rate for the second quarter, ending on June 30, 2020, is 5% per year, compounded daily. The interest rate for the third quarter, ending September 30, 2020, is 3% per year, compounded daily.

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

Sadly the IRS shut down for almost 4 months due to the Covid situation and since your return required human attention it was put on hold until the IRS processing centers reopened mid June ... they are hard at work trying to catch up on the work that piled up ... nothing you can do but wait until they get to your return.

Ready to mail means that you have to print and mail the tax return.  TurboTax does not and cannot mail the tax return for you.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for the procedure for printing and mailing a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online/01/26258

Or see this TurboTax support FAQ for how to change from mail to e-file - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/e-file/help/how-do-i-change-from-mail-to-e-file-in-turbotax-online/01/26985

Sorry you did not read the screens carefully enough but if it says READY TO MAIL then YOU were going to mail in the return ... TT cannot ink sign the paper return for you.   See all the screens below that told you to do this ...

NOW ... if you are eligible to efile the return you can switch to efile now if you like ...

To change to e-filing:

In normal times it takes 16 weeks to process an amended return. Since the IRS is way behind in processing mailed returns, it will probably take a lot longer than 16 weeks this year. You can track the status using this link:

Where is my taxes

Taxes or your Refund?  Did you efile or mail your return? They just started processing mailed returns that have been stacking up. See this IRS page for the latest information
https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

If you efiled....Was your return Accepted? First double check your efile status here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

When you efile you get back 2 emails. The first email only confirms the transmission. The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile.

Then only the IRS can tell you. IRS Where's my refund https://www.irs.gov/refunds/
Make sure you are using the refund amount from your actual federal tax return and not the combined amount Turbo Tax showed you at the end. That was for federal and state combined.

When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc.  what does it say?

When will you get your refund,

Heck,

I just called Turbo Tax  about the fact that I have yet to recieve  (ya know 5 weeks after I sent it in, 4 weeks after I got e-mails from Turbo Tax  telling me to activate it) the debit card that Turbo Tax was  supposed to send to me.

I have just spent over an hour with Turbo Tax finding out that they pretty much won't do crap about getting me a card. Sure they say they will, but turns out, they have a third party that sends out the card.

Turbo Tax  tried to get me to call this third party to complain.

Think of that.

Turbo Tax tried to get me to do THEIR job.

I am still waiting on that card.

I wrote an email to my state Rep. I got a call with in a few days and assigned a Tax Advocate. Seems like the didn't file any of the PTC forms and ended ending pending funds. Unreal.

Did you enter your 1095-A form for the health insurance?  A lot of people seemed to have missed entering it.

  • 6 months is the waiting period for child support offsets. I go through this every year for 15 years so far. So not only do i recieve child support once a year, the IRS gets to keep it for 6 months and they get the interest not me.

Just got off the phone with IRS. They said they just started processing returns August 1st & that it will take 6-8 weeks. They are of course processing in chronological order. I filed February 3rd and was mailed a request for healthcare forms 1st week of March (which I mailed back same day). So since we’re only 3 weeks in since they started back up again; I guess we have about 5 weeks to go.

Anyone have $3K I can borrow for my kid’s tuition until I get my return, lol. Just kidding (not really).

Appreciate the "amended return" link post!

I bet most of us will receive the following:

Your amended return information is currently unavailable in this application. It takes up to 3 weeks for an amended return to show on your account. You can generally expect your amended return to be processed within 16 weeks from the date we receive it. Check the date you filed your amended return and try again later.

I'm in NY and never received the letter (I have a permanent address, no recent moves, etc), and JUST received the letter requiring me to amend and resubmit the return. On one hand, I am happy to have received some feedback but on the other, it's a bit frustrating there was no better "safety net" in Turbo Tax to have caught this. The section that asked if I had a 1095-A letter I selected "no, I do not" (because I didn't have a letter) the section merely skips by. With some digging within my health insurance marketplace, the IRS instructions, and the Turbo Tax help section I was able to get all my paperwork in line and mail it out. What's interesting is that I have never received that paper prior, but now I'm aware of the future and how important it is. Just wish there was something built into Turbo Tax that basically "knew" that one cannot skip that section simply because a letter wasn't received. thanks!

The Health Insurance tab has been removed because the penalty for not having health care insurance for tax year 2019 and beyond has been removed.

If health insurance was provided from the Marketplace, state or healthcare.gov then a Form 1095-A would be received.  The 1095-A is required to be entered so that the Form 8962 Premium Tax Credit can be generated.

The 1095-A information is entered under Deductions & Credits this year:

  1. Sign in and Continue your return.
  2. Click on Deductions & Credits near the top center of the screen.
  3. Find Medical on the list. If you don't see it, click on See all tax breaks at the bottom.
  4. Click on Show more to the right of Medical
  5. Find Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A) on the short list, click Start on the right.
