Where can I find the 8915 F form on the TurboTax app?

The last step to complete my taxes have been waiting on the 8915 E tax form. I cannot find it on the TurboTax app and it was supposed to have come out on 3/31/2022. It is now 4/1/2022 and I am still not able to find the form.

The Form 8915-F was included in the TurboTax online editions in the early evening of 03/23

The Form 8915-F was included as a software update for All the TurboTax desktop editions on 03/24

If you are using the desktop editions, update your software.  Click on Online at the top of the desktop program screen.  Click on Check for Updates.

You must go to the Retirement Income section of the program for a Form 1099-R to be able to enter your 2nd year of the 2020 distribution -

Click on Federal

Click on Wages & Income

Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click on the Start or Revisit button

On the screen

 Click on

NO

, if you did not receive a 2021 Form 1099-R in 2022

If you had a Covid-19 related distribution in 2020 and selected to spread the distribution over 3 years -

Answer Yes when asked Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?

Answer Yes when asked if you took a Qualified 2020 Disaster Distribution

This is not required on a Form 8915-F for a Coronavirus-related distribution

After completing the Wages & Income section you will land on a screen Did you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2020?

Review the steps and see the images below. The following steps should be used to enter your COVID qualifying distribution.  Do Not enter a FEMA code because this doesn't have one. You must have your Form 8915-E from your 2020 tax return.

  1. Wages & Income > Retirement Plans and Social Security
  2. IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) >  Start, Revisit or Update > Continue
  3. Answer Yes  'Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?
  4. Answer Yes, You had a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution
  5. Complete the Information using your 2020 Tax return > Continue  (use either section but not both (Pension or IRA depending on your situation)
  6. Enter any amount you may have  repaid in 2021, if applicable
  7. Finish the entry for your spouse if applicable or just click Continue
  8. Complete any additional retirement questions as you move through this section
  9. Continue until you have finished and returned back to the Wages & Income Screen.
  10. Do NOT stop and change sections without completing it.

If the 2020 distribution was from an account that was Not an IRA

  • 2020 Form 8915E Line 9 - Enter 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 9

If the 2020 distribution was from an IRA account

  • 2020 Form 8915E Line 17 -  Enter 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 17

Do not enter anything in the other boxes, leave them blank (empty).

Are we going to have to wait until March to get this form in TT 2022 or is it there already?  Waiting until the end of March is not acceptable.

IRS form 8915-F Qualified Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments allowed you to spread the payment of taxes for a retirement plan distribution over tax years 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Are you expecting to use this form?  Forms availability says that the form will not be available until February 16.

If you are not expecting to be using this form, perhaps a question was answered incorrectly when circulating through the questions.

Try the following steps if you are using TurboTax Online to see if the error message will clear:

  • Go to Federal on the left side of the screen
  • Go to Wages & Income at the left side of the screen
  • Scroll to the bottom of the section without making any changes and click Wrap Up Income
  • Continue moving forward until you see a question about whether you took a disaster distribution in 2020 and select 'No'
  • Run the Federal Review again to see if the error has cleared

If the error still has not cleared, you may be able to remove an IRS form 8915-F by:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Tax Tools.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Click on Delete a form.
  • Find the form listed and click Delete to the right.

Why does it say e-file will not be supported for the taxpayer 8915-F but it will be supported for the spouse form?

The form will be updated to file on 2/23/2023.

You can view the form's availability here, to keep track of when the form will be available.

According to the IRS website the form was ready to go at the end of January. This is my last year to use this form thankfully so it may also be my last year for TurboTax too if the delay is strictly TurboTax's inability to keep things updated in a timely manner.

Why is TurboTax so behind on this form? Why is this taking so long to update? I have emails from later in January from TurboTax saying the section and forms were ready to go and then when I go to file a couple of weeks ago it suddenly isn't ready again but doesn't say it until you get ready to file. Make up your mind. You're playing with peoples livelihoods here and for as much as we have to pay to use this service, I expect it to be ready to go.

Now it has been delayed again to 3/2/23!  It is frustrating to sit down and pick up where I left off only to be given yet another date weeks out.  The other online companies have it available and ready to go.

It's delayed...again...until 3/9/23. Last year if I recall correctly, it wasn't ready until late March or early April.

Thanks, you are right.  Also TT is now displaying the updated date (which is interesting since it didn't do a program update first).

The final form was published some time ago - either in January (according to the final form which is here) or in December according to this )

Yes. Form 8915-F is available on Mar. 9. See Federal Individual Form Availability.

Form 8915 is used to report a disaster-related retirement distribution, and any repayments of those funds. For tax years 2021 and 2022, Form 8915-F will replace Form 8915-E, which was the form used to report 2020 COVID-related qualified disaster distributions.

Did you even take the time to verify the form is available before you posted?  Today is March 9th and the form is still not available.

Of course I did, I don't state facts without checking them first.  I suggest you reinstall TurboTax since it's not working properly for you.  I filed this evening with the 8915-F.

Actually the news is not so good. My Federal return was rejected because of an error in the 8915F data. In more than 25 years of filing I've never had a return rejected.

The code is

/Return/ReturnData/IRS8915F/FEMADisasterDeclarationNum - Data in the return is missing or invalid. Please double check your entries.

Isn't the return review supposed to check that this won't happen?

How long it took to find out it’s rejected? What happens if it is rejected, can you refile with Efile?

Level 3
Mar 10, 2023 7:23:30 AM

I found out about 8 hours later and you can try to refile but given that this return went through a review both my me and my TurboTax I am not sure that it's ready to be refiled. It struck me thay maybe Intuit knows about this issue and pulled the form which would explain why some people are not able to see it.
